Tips
Time before treatment The amount of time that passes before getting attention for an injury is directly related to the recovery period. On average, if an injury is treated within the first week, the recovery time is halved. If a sprain is treated within the first 24 hours the recovery can be two weeks instead of six. Does the Doctor know best?
Does the Doctor know best?
General Practitioners (GP's) or Doctors serve an important role in society to advise and determine how serious an illness is and decide what is the best course of treatment. When it comes to musculo-skeletal conditions they often lack experience, which is why we work closely with doctors in the Enfield area, as Physical Therapists we can detect imbalances in structure that may be affecting your daily life and causing pain but may not be serious enough to consider a GP referral to a consultant. We welcome working with your GP to assist in your recovery.
Hot or Cold?
It's always best to get advice on what treatment regime to use but as a rule I always advise the use of cold first. Cold is a very good pain killer and reduces inflammation, whereas heat can sometimes make painful conditions worse. A good start is to put a cold pack on, wrapped in a tea towel for 2-3 minutes, put it back in the freezer for 20 minutes and repeat this as often as you need to. DON'T leave the cold on for longer than 10 minutes as this can cause frostbite. Do not use ice over the chest as this may cause a muscle reaction and bring on angina pain, and never use ice on an open wound.
Muscle or nerve pain?
If your pain is sharp and 'catches' you on certain movements it's likely to be nerve related, this could be what is commonly referred to as a trapped or pinched nerve. If the pain is more dull and achy it's more likely to be a muscle pain. There are exceptions to the rule but these are good indications.
